Tight Tussle In Weissel Cup Grand Final Comes Down To Final Seconds

Kangaroos won a battle of attrition to rise to the top in the Weissel Cup.

There had been little between Kangaroos and Brothers all season and the grand final proved no different at Equex Centre on Sunday.

With the expectations of a tight contest, both struggled to take advantage of their opportunities throughout the clash.

It set up for a frenetic finish to the clash with both teams scoring in the final four minutes, in what was the most free-flowing football of the game.

However ill discipline hurt Brothers as they conceded a penalty while on the attack to stop their chances of a late comeback.

Instead Kangaroos just did enough to edge out their rivals to take a 10-6 victory.

Coach Heath Cole was pleased his side were able to overcome the grand final pressure to come away with the title.

"We worked hard all season just to be there for each other, stay in the grind and work to the final siren and we got the chocolates," Cole said.

It took 25 minutes for the first points of the clash when Lachie Cole kicked a penalty goal following Brothers hooker Axel Knowles being sent to the sin bins.

However Kangaroos answered with a penalty goal of their own as Angus Williams levelled things after the half-time siren.

Kangaroos struck early in the second stanza when Opey Ayedero scored off a kick five minutes after the break.

The next set he went close to his second in similar circumstances, only for the ball to spill loose.

It was part of a real ploy by Kangaroos.

"They knew if they kicked high into the corners, especially with a bit of wind around, anything could happen," Heath Cole said.
